Nobody has ever complained that a website loaded too fast. Plenty of people have left one that loaded too slowly, and they rarely come back to explain why.

Speed isn't a technical detail you polish at the end. It is part of the design, just like the colours and the words. A beautiful page that appears after five seconds is, for many visitors, a page that never appeared at all.

The good news is that most slow sites are slow for the same handful of reasons.

Where the Seconds Actually Go

Images. A photo straight from a camera can be ten times larger than it needs to be. Resizing and using modern formats like WebP is usually the single biggest win.

Too many plugins. Every plugin can add its own scripts and styles to every page, even pages that don't use it.

Fonts. Four font families in six weights each is a lot of downloading before a single word appears.

Hosting and caching. Without caching, the server rebuilds every page for every visitor, from scratch.

The Order I Fix Things In

I measure first, on a real phone over a normal connection, not just on a fast office laptop. Then I fix in order of impact: images, caching, unused scripts, fonts, and only then the fine-tuning.

• Compress and resize every image, and lazy-load what sits below the fold.

• Turn on page caching and a CDN like Cloudflare.

• Remove plugins that do one small thing a line of code could do.

A fast website says something before anyone reads a word: we value your time. For a business that wants calls, bookings or sales, that first impression is worth more than any animation.
